Learn as Protest
Friends,
In the aftermath of the election I have not had much to write here. Atlas is important to me and will remain so. I plan to keep it as a bi-monthly publication.
Today I write to you about my project Learn as Protest. This new project is a Teach In that I initiated this week at Trump Tower. My hope is that people will come and read important texts in the lobby of Trump Tower, which is a Privately Owned Public Space. My hope is that people will use this time to read, teach and learn as protest; to empower one another with texts that inspire and inform. I have been reading from Elie Wiesel’s “Night” and Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the Unites States”. My friends and family have read poems, speeches by political leaders and op-ed’s they found particularly important.
I am writing to ask you if you would like to get involved. If you’re not in NY, make your own Teach In. If you are here and would rather not, find a way to make activism a part of your daily life. This is something I am just learning now and it is a shame that it took the election of a game show host to make me realize this.
The effort has garnered some attention. The New York Times, The Globe and Mail and Maclean’s Magazine have all quoted me on the Teach In. Reuters UK posted this image.
And while all of this is nice, it is wasted unless I get people to do something more than they normally would with their day.
Please consider making activism a part of your daily life. Please give to the causes that you hold most dear, especially the ones that serve communities that will be affected by the new President’s agenda. Please help with the Teach In if you can.
Many Thanks for listening,
-Jeff Bergman
